Our story
Domaine Botania was founded in 2019 as a family project led by Dominique and her daughter Rosalie, following their participation in the S’Entreprendre program of the Lise Watier Foundation. In its early days, the company took shape through small urban gardens in the Saint-Jérôme area and a cultivated plot within a permaculture orchard in Saint-Placide.
As interest in our herbal infusions grew, it quickly became necessary to anchor the project in a larger space. In May 2020, we established our farm in L’Ascension, in the Hautes-Laurentides, to develop production in alignment with our vision. Since then, the farm has continually evolved, transforming from poor, sandy soil into a living ecosystem rich in biodiversity and cultivation.
Today, we grow a wide diversity of medicinal and aromatic plants, dye plants, heritage vegetable varieties, and a diversified northern orchard. Our approach combines permaculture, agroforestry, and biodynamic methods, integrated with a small-scale, mindful livestock operation, to create a sustainable balance between soil, plants, and animals.
Yet the story of Domaine Botania began long before the company itself. It starts in a small village in Abitibi, with Dominique’s grandmother.
Dominique’s grandmother was an herbalist who owned a farm with expansive lands where she harvested plants and prepared her remedies. People from nearby villages called her the “village witch” and would visit her to have their cards read, to read tea leaves, and to receive guidance along with herbal medicines. She cared not only for people, but also for animals, and local farmers would bring her to treat their livestock when something was wrong.
She was a simple and generous woman, and Dominique spent much of her childhood on her grandmother’s land. From an early age, she accompanied her in harvesting herbs and received, in her own way, the transmission of knowledge and traditions.
Dominique later completed her training as a therapeutic herbalist at L’Armoire aux herbes and at Herbothèque. She also studied medical laboratory sciences and biology, which allows her to bring a scientific perspective to natural care. Over time, she worked on several farms, including as manager of an organic farm, within a permaculture orchard, and on a biodynamic farm, gaining extensive practical experience and knowledge.
This heritage has deeply shaped Dominique’s path. The knowledge she inherited and later refined through formal education and hands-on agricultural experience now forms the foundation of Domaine Botania’s expertise and continues to guide every decision, from cultivation to plant transformation.
